With the announcement that the first stages of mass production are due to begin in July 2007 and with SED TVs expected to go on sale soon after in the fourth quarter of 2007 we will be keeping an eye out on quotes from Canon and Toshiba management for anything SED related.

Toshiba Corp. plans to begin full-scale mass production of surface-conduction electron-emitter display, or SED, televisions it is developing in cooperation with Canon Inc. in early 2008, its president Atsutoshi Nishida said in an interview with the Yomiuri Shimbun.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Hitachi Ltd. will triple the liquid crystal display panel production capacity at a joint venture in Mobara, Chiba Prefecture.
Consequently, the annual capacity at IPS Alpha Technology Ltd., the venture the two firms set up last year in cooperation with Toshiba Corp., will become the equivalent of 5 million 32-inch LCD panels, the two said.
But Toshiba will refrain from joining the greater investment plan this time, partly because it will put priority on developing the next-generation flat-screen SED TV in conjunction with Canon Corp., industry officials said.

Toshiba and Canon played down the apparent delay in the launch of the products, saying they would be in time for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, which are expected to be an opportunity to sell TVs.
"Toshiba and Canon consider the launch of SED TVs to be a major industry milestone, a once-in-50-years historical turning point for the TV industry, comparable to the initial introduction of CRT television," they said.
